Sohag Governorate is one of the four governorates that make up the southern Upper Egypt region, along with Aswan, the Red Sea, Qena, and Luxor governorates. The governorate's capital (Sohag) is located approximately halfway between Cairo and Aswan (467 km from Cairo and 412 km from Aswan). The governorate consists of 12 centers, including 12 cities, 3 districts, and 51 main villages, 270 affiliated villages, in addition to 1445 farms and hamlets. There are no villages in it because villages are found in the Lower Egypt governorates, while in Upper Egypt they are called hamlets. Sohag city is the administrative, cultural, and economic capital of the governorate, and Sohag University is located there.
